Police have stated that a dog is the number 1 deterrent to thieves. Thieves are looking for something easy, which means no noise, no light and an easy escape route. Dogs have very keen senses and are territorial, so they make ideal guards.
The BBQ may have been kids doing mischief, you never know. Especially if it has a low resale value. Thieves want small, easily concealed, easily peddled items like jewelry and cash. BBQs aren't common at pawn shops unless they are top of the line, clean and new.

The number one thing you could to is get a dog (personally, I have a black lab/pit bull mix that looks pretty tough). Theives don't want to mess with a place that has a dog barking to warm people of their presence.
You can also invest in motion sensor flood lights. They have to be monuted high enough so someone can't reach the bulbs to unscrew them.
If you want to spend big bucks, you can install surveillance cameras and motion sensing alarms both close to your house and around the yard. You can also get an alarm service and put their signs around the yard.
Finally, take up shooting. Let your neighbors know you shoot and have guns in the house. While this makes your house a potential target for the firearms, it also lets people know that you have guns in the house. Neighborhood theives (bored kids) will tend to bypass your house if they know they might get killed. Also make sure you have a quality safe for your guns (not a $100 Wal-Mart special, but a $1000 heavy steel safe).
Use common sence...like you mentioned, chain the grill. Make sure you have good door locks (give your doors a heavy push to see if you can break through...if you can, obviously fix the problem).
If you have a dog, I'd stay away from the "Beware of Dog" signs. If you have a dog and it bites someone, by simply displaying the sign, a lawyer can say that you knew the dog was a danger and took insufficient steps to protect the public.

yeah kids, but not the overly bad thing, they gave up trying too come around causing misschief when they understood the dogs read bodylanguage, and smell well enough they wouldnt even get anywhere near the kids before everyone living in any relevant distance knew they were about and not behaving normally dogs react too what is not normal, simple as that and put out an allert, its not a mad bark, but it is an there is someone coming, with a bit of an intensity too it if something is out of normal basic gist dogs would scare some mischief mongers off because they loose the element of surprice when there is a dog around, which make their buisnis more risky and they go pick on someone where they will have the advantage of not having their visitation anounced loud and clear

I had problems with people messing with the cars in the driveway so I put flood lights up and I guess thieves don't like the light because.(knock on wood) they haven't been back. they also make a high pitched motion siren I think it is for scaring deer away from gardens it is not extremely loud but it is loud enough for you to hear it. and if you have a way to attach them Lowe's has small battery operated alarms they are nice to install on the doors around the house. The BBQ is a problem but you have to protect your self too.

Get a Rottweiler... Maybe fake security cams (even real ones LOL) Even try a motion light, the trick would be to get one of those light bulb adapters that allow you to put a extension cord in it. Then run that extension cord back to the interior of your house and plug in a lamp to it or radio. That will let you know when someone is on your property and wake you up or alert you.

Have a dog, put a sign on the lawn that says "this home is protected by Smith and Wesson".. Thiefs think twice when they see either.
Motion detection lights are a good way to alert you if someone is in your yard.
