I.I.T. is a very highly respected school. The graduates of IIT would be some of the very best engineers and scientists in the world. It isnt useful to try to decide if it is "the best" but it is certainly highly respected all over the world.
I kind of doubt if your friend actually went there. If he did, he would either be working somewhere for big bucks, or he would be in a top Graduate school in the USA or UK, like Cambridge or MIT or Stanford or Duke or someplace like that.

IIT? fyi- it is spelled know (they don't teach grammar in India anymore). In that area of the world almost any higher educational institution is touted as their best-I highly doubt it.
Ask yourselves this. If it is so damn good, why don't Americans sign up to get a degree from IIT? Exactly- they don't.
Any one of our private colleges is of a higher standard and that is with 90% of the faculy stoned or borderline alcoholics.

IIT is the best in India, but MIT is still the best in the world.
