Nothing really can be done. The US has moved on from its "hands on approach" to South American issues of previous administrations so don't expect anything dramatic. Venezuela also is one of the leading oil producers in the world, but its a kind of oil that is very expensive to extract from the ground. Thus it needs high oil market prices to sustain the profit the country makes, that is why he keeps people fearful with his axis of evil country visits and inflammatory remarks.

Venezuela is also one of those countries that think they smell the end of the American era and is trying to secure its spots beside the new nations arising (Russia, China, Iran, and Cuba as a continental ally). I don't think they will initiate anything, but they are preparing for a major change in the international political climate.

Nothing at the moment. He's all talk, and not a serious threat. If we do anything serious to challenge him, future demagogues will be able to place all the blame for his failed policies on the U.S.

It would be better in the long run for the people of South America to see Chavez fail on his own, so there would be no one else to blame.

Hugo is bcoming a dictator. Sooner the US is going to take a covert mission to overthrow his regime. That should not be the way to topple him though.

Umm .. nothing. He's the democratically elected head of state of a foreign country. Besides, the USG already tried backing a coup there that failed miserably.

Considering it was through meddling with other countries and their leaders that got us involved in Iraq and Afghanistan, I say we leave him alone. Guys like him will go away if you ignore them.
