Sleep apnea is very common, and it affects more than twelve million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Risk factors include being male, overweight, and over the age of forty, but sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age, even children. Yet still because of the lack of awareness by the public and healthcare professionals, the vast majority remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated, despite the fact that this serious disorder can have significant consequences.

Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for job impairment and motor vehicle crashes. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated. Several treatment options exist, and research into additional options continues.

it's called sleep apnea, and it really doesn't matter how much you weigh (though overweight people are more likely to have this problem) there are a couple kinds, obstructive and central

OSA (most common) happens when the muscles controlling your upper palate and/or tounge relax and block your airway

CSA (less common) happens when your brain goes haywire and forgets to signal for you to breathe

you can also have a combination of the 2 types

get to a doctor ASAP!!! there are treatments available and once you do a sleep study to determine which type you have and how bad it is you can get help

one is called CPAP (continuous pressure something or other) it's basically a mask you wear over your nose that's hooked up to a machine which blows pressurized air to keep your airway open

there's a new surgery where 3 little implants are inserted in your upper palate to stiffen it so this obvisouly is just for OSA not CSA

get to the doctor, sleep apnea itself is a risk factor for stroke!!!

It means you have sleep apnea. Don't get upset , one out of three people do. It plays hell on your blood pressure and causes some folks to fall asleep while driving.

I sleep with a c-pap machine that forces air up my nose and I sleep all through the night.

I thought I slept all through the nite before, but on my sleep test , I stopped breathing 98 times per hour.

My brother chose the operation.

It could be that you have sleep apnea . You don't have to be over weight to have this condition. If you are snoring a lot or not breathing in your sleep, this is a serious condition. You should go in for a sleep study immediately. Good Luck ! :)
