LUIGI YOU MORON! 3X CAN NOT EQUAL 5X. The reason is that 3 times zero is zero, BUT that has to work in reverse as well. Zero divided by Zero is NOT 3.
I guess in some fundamental way your equation is correct if you are saying zero is equal to zero. But why would you need to define that?
5 x 2 = 10 because 10 divided by 2 = 5 and 10 divided by 5 = 2.
Think about it.

They can stand for Real numbered variables or Integer variables, but, the key is that they stand for Variables.
There are some standard usages that text books use. r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, and z normally represent Real Variables.
a, b, c, are common for Whole numbers and angles of triangles.
Theta, Phi, and other greek letters are usually reserved for angles or function names in higher level math.
i, j, k, l, m, n are often used for Counting Numbers and you will see computer programmers use these for indices for iterations. That may be a little old school, but, I still do it.

in most algebraic equations the variables are x and y. x Being the x axis in the cartesian plane (the horizontal line) and y being the y axis (the vertical line). SOmetimes they use: a, b, z, m, etc

The letter are called variables and you can only combine them if they are the same for example: 2a+12b-3a=?
2a-3a=-1a
so -1a=12b is the answer! Hope this helps!

you will have to rephrase the question
if you are asking what letters used (like x in 3x), then those are variables

they can equal anything but must be same value throughout the equation
3x=5x
has to be 0 through the whole thing in this case
