~One characteristic is that it gives teachers something to ask about and to find out who in the class is too lazy or too dumb to do the assignment. It helps make up plant tissue--it gives it its structure. Cellulose is indigestible by animals. Herbivores that eat cellulose (like ruminants, such as cows or sheep) have bacteria in their gut that break cellulose down into usable energy. I heard of cows being fed shredded newsprint (cellulose with a little ink added) and they actually survived on it. Gross, but better than feeding them animal flesh (which they also do--read Fast Food Nation if you don't believe me.)
