If a person is hospitalized due to them being found "likely to cause harm to his/herself or others", then it's likely to be called a "psychiatric hold."
"Committed" is when you are in a mental institution, which is not a hospital. A mental institution would be equivalent to, like, a drug rehab center.

If you go to the doctor, then are allowed to go home afterward its called out-patient. If they keep you and make you stay at the hospital its called in-patient.
