I've tried a number of different registry cleaner software programs and found the freeware on par with the commercial products. The 2 best registry cleaners I have used are TuneUp Utilities 2006 and Iolo's System Mechanic, both offer a 30 day trial period. However, in your case, you want a free program.

There are a number of free registry cleaners and a few of them do a decent job. In choosing a registry cleaner, you have to decide if you want a registry cleaner which is very aggressive or cautious when scanning for registry errors. The registry is a critical part of the Windows operating system, even a few errors can cause the computer to crash. A cautious registry cleaner will only display the registry which are safe to remove; however, it will most likely miss some registry errors. The aggressive registry cleaners dig deep in to the registry for errors but, sometimes, it mistakenly labels a registry key to be an error, when it fact it is not. For a cautious registry cleaner, I recommend CCleaner (aka Crap Cleaner). It is a privacy tool (e.g. deletes your cookies and browser history) but it has an excellent registry cleaner which is reliable though it does not do a deep scan. If you want an aggressive registry cleaner then I recommend Eusing Registry Cleaner. I've tested and find it to be a good tool but it requires the user to have some knowledge about registry keys. It is better for the computer savvy. Both products are good choices.

1. TuneUp Utilities 2006 (http://www.tune-up.com/)
2. Iolo System Mechanic 6 (http://www.iolo.com)
3. CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/)
4. Eusing Registry Cleaner (http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm)

Eusing Registry Cleaner will ask you to register but you don't need to for it to work. I strongly advise you to not register the product since it is likely they will use your e-mail address to bury you in a heap of spam mail.

normally you don't need to fix your registry. If you suspect something's not right, reload your op sys.
if you suspect you have a virus, get spybot, adaware and windows defender. all are free. run them, in safe mode to be sure.

It should be loaded on your P.C already. Go to start, then run, then enter
regfix, then enter. It should start automatically.
