A few seconds after I log on and get into Windows (I have a Windows XP laptop), the screen freezes for a moment, then it goes black. Then the screen reappears, but everything is a bit slower. Letters appear more slowly on the screen after you type them and when I drag the scroll bar on the right hand side, it's slow and choppy. What is causing this and what should I do? I already tried scanning using a few virus scanners.

all i have is my xp firewall and never have had a virus because i know what I'm doing, one tip of advice for you, never download any software from the Internet that claims to be free, because its not, you will get spyware and then a virus will come soon, the only way to fix your problem without having to reformat is this, boot up in safe mode then run virus scan, viruses and spyware avoid virus scanners on your desktop, but in safe mode they are frozen making possible to locate and remove them, and the virus scanner itself could be causing the problem, virus scanners use your cpu and ram to run,

It sounds to me like you have a virus or spyware.

My suggestion is to get Spy Sweeper. I have it and love it. It does a great job and keeps me protected at all times.

You say you have use a few virus scanners, the problem may also be because you have more than one virus scanner on your computer. Virus scanners tend to clash with each other, thus causing your system to malfunction and work slower.

My suggestion is to get one virus scanner program and stick with just one.

I use Trend Micro and love it.

Get Ad-Aware, Spy-bot Search and Destroy, and Windows Defender. Run these and then do a defrag. See if that speeds it up. Chances are that it's spyware causing your problem.

im not really sure but if you don't already know, windows xp,even with all the updates, is pretty unstable and is quite random in its problems, plus customer support is useless. my suggestion is try using that system restore dvd that comes with just about every computer and try that.
