I want it to be a safe woodburning furnace that looks good.

Its gonna look like a 55 gallon drum.

Get a welding torch, a circular saw with a cutting wheel, aircraft snips, anything like that. Cut a hole in the front, put it on its side. add leggs or on bricks. Cut another hole for the chimney. If you are up for it, buy cement and get some fieldstones, maybe from any highway cut through. Just collect them. Mix the cement and paste the stones in an attractive manner. Maybe read Count Rumfords book an fireplace design.

I have seen one in the northern book or some where it had 2 drums mounted on top of each other horizontaly a flue went from the bottom one to the top one then it had a stack on top with doors cut into the front of each drum and they had legs on the bottom one. I think it was called a double drum burner
