My brother and I will use our guitars to come up with a melody, then we tell each other what we are thinking about when we hear it. I guess what I'm saying is, What kind of a story does that melody tell us. We have wrote several songs like that. Thats what seems to work best for us. Oh yea! One more thing. Everytime you hear a catchy phrase like "Chain Lighting" or " Twinkle Twinkle lucky star" write it down. You never know when you might be able to incorperate it into your new song. I read that the John Lennon and Paul McCartney was joking around with there chauffer once and he said, give me a break guys I've been working 8 days a week! The Beatles had a big hit with 8 days a week!

Different bands work in different ways. Some people write at a piano, some people start on a guitar. It sometimes makes things a lot easier if it's written on guitar, simply because it's easier to see what is possible - especially when it comes to complicated riffs.
There are also several different ways to write the melody, some people write out the lyrics first, then fit the melodic line around it, some people do it the other way round. It all depends on personal preference, but often songs ARE written on guitar first.

I think it totally depends on the group and the writers. I don't see why a song couldn't come to life on a guitar first. Just because you might not be a writer doesn't mean you can't have a melody running through your head and you want to have an out for it, ya know?

The two main instruments used for song writing are keyboards, or guitar. Generally, the songwriter will determine the form of the song. Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Verse-Chorus...etc etc. The the writer will figure out what tempo the song will be played in, and also what key it will be in. After that is determined, The writer will generally sing the melody while dtermining which chord progression he wants to back that melody up with. The rest of the band fills itself in in compliance to key, tempo, and chord progression.

it happens both ways...iv been in a few bands and have started from lyrics then guitar and upwards but the easiest way is to start with a guitar melody i believe cuz everything seems to slot in more smoothly that way.

It starts with the guitarist and the rest of the band backs him up! At least it was that way in my band.

I usually start with the guitar part and eventually work in the lyrics unless I have the lyrics already in my mind, then I try to form the music around them
