I have been stuck on this darn problem for (10) minutes and I really need to move on to my History homework.

Thanks in advance for your help!

multiply both sides by 4
z - 4 = -3 (z+2)

distribute the right side
z - 4 = -3z - 6

add 3z to both sides
4z - 4 = -6

add 4 to both sides
4z = -2

divide by 4
z = -1/2

You could multiply both sides by 4 to cancel the fractions:

4(1/4)(z-4) = z-4; 4(-3/4)(z+2) = -3(z+2) = -3z - 6

So z - 4 = -3z - 6

Add 3z and 4 to both sides to get 4z = -2

Divide both by 4 to get z = -1/2

1/4 (z - 4) = -3/4 (z + 2)
1/4 z - 1/4 (4) = -3/4 z - 3/4 (2)
1/4 z - 1 = -3/4 z - 3/2
1/4 z + 3/4 z = 1 - 3/2
z = -1/2

1/4 (z - 4) = -3/4 (z + 2)
1/4z - [(1/4 * 4)] = -3/4z + [(-3/4 * 2)]
1/4z - 4/4 = -3/4z + (-6/4)
1/4z - -4/4 = -3/4z -6/4
1/4z + 3/4z = -6/4 + 4/4
4/4z = -2/4
z = -1/2

1/4(z-4)= -3/4(z+2)
1(z-4)/4 =-3(z+2)/4
z-4=-3z-6
6-4=-3z-z
2=-4z
2/4=-z
1/2=-z
z= -1/2
