Nope. I've lived in Germany for almost 12 years now and still don't know enough German to reliably order a decent meal in that language.

Of course, with so many Germans able to speak English, this is rarely a big problem. Nearly everyone in my neighborhood (in a small town just north of Heidelberg) speaks at least some English. My landlady next door teaches English at a local high school. The neighbor on the other side owns a business which requires frequent travel to the US. The neighbor directly across the street is a Physics professor (at a local university) who has studied at one time or another in both the US and UK. In fact, even though I don't speak German, I spend more time talking with my neighbors here than I ever did in the US.

Nearly every business I go to has at least someone working there who can speak English. In the rare situations where that has not been the case, we're usually still able to communicate with a combination of hand gestures, my broken German, and their broken English.

Will I ever learn German? Bits and pieces here and there. While I truly appreciate the efforts most Germans have made to learn English, and honestly love their beautiful country, I seriously doubt at this point I will ever learn the German language enough to be fluent in it.
