Not sure about NJ but usually, you get a state consider you a resident if you get a state I.D./driver's license there or register to vote there. There is probably one or two other ways, but those are almost standard for most states.

I don't have the specific answer as to how long you must live in New Jersey before you are considered to be a legal resident of the state. However, I do suggest that you contact the state legislature, where you can get this and any other information on this matter that you may at the same time need to ask.

Put up with a lot of crap from their residents, not pump your own gas, and hang out on the Jersey shore on the weekends

I would assume once you change your address and get a valid drivers license in the state, that would make you a resident...

if it is for instate college purposes, or to be considered for some native american funds, or stuff like that, it is usually a year. Other than that, get a liscence, register to vote, andhave an address there.
