Ten years ago I would have thought this idea to be impossible, but the last few years have caused such a split in the way Americans think, that I would not be surprised to actually see the United States divided.
I have been back and forth across the USA at least 10 times and drove coast to coast again just a few weeks ago. I have never seen the people so divided. There really is a dramatic difference between how the people in the conservative "red" states (where the economies are focused on agriculture and traditional industries such as mining) and the "liberal" blue states (which have the bulk of the research universities, the hi-tech industries, financial markets and international trade) are thinking about the future. I don't think there has been such a huge division among Americans since the Vietnam War - and in those days the division was mainly between young people vs old people. Today it is a division between Americans who want to force the world to obey us by military power and internally have the government impose conservative religious and moral rules on all the people vs those who want us to focus our national efforts on socail issues such as education, preservation of the environment and health care. In some parts of the country the contempt that is expressed for the President is very outspoken and universal, and in other parts, you would certainly be risking injury if you spoke against him.
Unless the next national elections produce a leader who will at least make a little bit of an attempt to bring people together, I think this discontent will begin to approach a level that truly could lead to dissolving the union.
In the history ofthe world, there are very few countries that have gone more than a few decades without a major rearrangement. It will be sad to see the USA become just another failure in the history of human attempts to design a government where power doesnt corrupt the powerful.

What for??
Anyway, the USA has 50 states.... I used to be able to list all 50 in a matter of minutes on a piece of paper along with the capitals of some of them when I was younger...
I probably would get 2 thirds or maybe 3 quarters of them now (and only a few capitals)... and that's only because my mom stopped using it as a trick to keep the kids occupied when we we younger.
New states will mean I have to revise my "alphabet trick".... There are 4 As, no Bs, 3 Cs, 1 D, no Es, 1 F, 1 G, 1 H, 4 Is, no Js, 2 Ks, 1 L, 8 Ms, 8 Ns, 3 Os, 1 P, no Qs, 1 R, 2 Ss, 2 Ts, 1 U, 2 Vs and 4 Ws..... I re-added them, that's 50

Christians are already going to south carolina with the purpose of taking over the government there.
Go to christianexodus.com and see for yourself.
At one time they said they would become independent if need be. I don't know what their intentions are lately however.

I doubt it, really. I can't really say Bush isn't the worst that I've experienced, I'm sure people back then would've welcomed him with open arms after Hoover abandoned them following the Great Crash.

No, but we are giving serious consideration to setting New York and California loose. The only problem is that no one will take them.
