My son is almost 6 months old and hates tummy time. He cries and screams and barely pushes up on his arms because he doesn't want to be on his tummy. He can do it, I've seen him do it many times, but he seems to be lazy. Is this delayed development or will he start holding himself up and crawling on his own? Should I worry?

He isn't lazy. He has probably been held a lot and not given floor time. Does he have a large head? It could be as simple as his neck get tired real fast when he tries to hold up his head. 6 months old is too early to start pushing a baby to do anything really. Mommy? I will let you in on a secret. Get a johnny jumper and have your man or brother or dad drill a hole in the beam in the ceiling of an area that has nothing for baby to bang into. Get one of those hooks with a wide thread(meant to go into wood) and screw it as tightly as you can into the hole. You will need to lengthen the jumper to be a foot longer than for hanging in a doorway. I'm sure you can figure it out. You hang from the hook to make sure it will hold your weight, and put his little butt in the johnny jumper. It's great for keeping him happy and occupied and he is sitting straight up, no neck pain. When you walk by him (it's a great babysitter) give him a boing and just watch what happens. I wish they made those things for adults. I chose to hang mine from the cieling because in a doorway, the babies get mashed fingers. Good luck.

He'll gain some sort of movement eventually. My baby was collicky and hated being left alone for the first 6 months of his life. Now he sits up on his own and can reach super far until he ends up on his tummy. He doesn't complain as much and is probably going to start crawling in the next 2 weeks (he is 8.5 months old). His older brother didn't crawl until he was 10 months old. Right now he can "butt scoot" to wherever he wants.

Don't worry!
the point of tummy time is to keep the head from getting flat, and to strengthen the baby's neck muscles.

another great way to do both of those things is to carry your baby around in a sling. At his age he can sit up in the kangaroo position and look out at the world.

he will crawl when he is ready, 6 months is early to do that stuff.

my son hated tummy time also although he was a bit younger when we were doing it. they sell the floor mats that have water and pretend sea stuff in them. I got mine at Fryes but both my kids loved it and I was able to keep my son on his tummy much longer.

Also if he is a big baby it will take him longer to do things such as crawling. My daughter was quite chubby and I thought she would never sit up or crawl but she did and walked by 10mos!

It may be that something is hurting him. Have his pediatrician check him for a hernia, my daughter was like that for awhile. Eventually, the hernia shrunk in size, and she was able to lay comfortably on her stomach and do all the lil baby things that kids do. If there is nothing wrong, then he's just moving at his own pace, and when he's ready to push up and play on his tummy, he will.

He's probably ok. Try getting down on the floor with him. Lay on your tummy in front of him. Smiles clapping all that helps make him like it more. When in doubt, talk with your pediatrition. At six months, he should be having a well baby check anyway. Ask him/her what he should be doing at this age. If he/she thinks that he is behind, they will refer you to therapists that can help him move it along.

My son hated tummy time because his face was down and he couldn't see anything but the floor. So we rolled up a towel and propped him up on it. It was amazing how fast he learned to like it that way.

Let him cry! He will learn to use his arms and and legs to get around if you let him on the floor on a mat or blanket!
