how do you calculate the volume of a liquid?

Measuring cup, graduated cylinder, anything that has volumetric markings to tell you how much liquid you have. Or if the liquid has a known density, you can weigh it and determine its volume from mass/density. (You just have to make sure your units are all the same scale--if you weigh in lbs. and have density in grams/cubic centimeters, you have to convert lbs. to grams before using the density equation. Conversely, you could convert the density reading to kg/cubic lbs. and convert the mass from lbs. to kg.) Another way would be to pour the liquid into a cubic container and measure the length of each side of the container (length, width and height where the liquid comes up to, correcting for the thickness of the container); then multiply them to get cubic units, ideally cubic centimeters, which is directly convertible to milliliters.

Volume is one of the few things we can measure directly.

Have you ever made a cake or some other food? Did you measure out a cup of milk or something like that? Well, you measured a volume of a liquid.

Well it would be more typical to measure it, not calculate it. But I suppose if you know the mass of the liquid and the density, then it would be equal to M/D

If you know its density, you can calculate it out using the formula density = mass/ volume.

Or you can simply pour it into a measuring cylinder.

volume = mass/density. usually its measured by using a graduated cylinder or volumetric flask.
