Her eyecolor is more of a muted violet, and they are real. They are real because colored contact lenses are a recent invention, and she had her violet eyes as a child/ teenager when there were no colored contacts to be had.
I would go search for a link, but I am quite sure somebody already has.

No. Only when she wore her purple contacts. There was a lot of drivel written about ET, just as there was a lot about MM and other movie stars. There is a whole industry based on feeding each other misinformation about the various luminaries. Most of it is horse feathers.

No silly, Her eyes were blue, contacts, color, accients of art made her look like she had purple eyes.
