One person whom I consider wise, once said: "You don't really have a problem, you just think you do."

What think he means is that it makes a lot of sense to really analyze your problems, in the sense that 'what is the worst that can happen, and where will I be when it does?' Is this issue really causing the pain or am I creating it?
It is the "unknown" aspect of a problem that gives it it's pain or fearsomeness.
Making yourself numb to pain like that is not bad, it's actually good, in that it will give you a little breathing space to reason things out.

No it's not bad to numb yourself to dull the mental pain.

It's called "self-medication." People do this all the time with drugs and alcohol. I suggest that if you are unhappy, and you have emotions that upset you, go through life high -- buy drugs, sell drugs, just DO NOT try to figure out what might be causing these feelings. DO NOT try to correct a bad relationship -- just dull your senses to it. DO NOT try to improve yourself, and/or your condition. It's eaiser to not face fears, and numb yourself. Sleeping pills work! Take a lot of them!

Yes it is. Emotions may be numbed but memories can not. They are stored away in your subconscious as repressed thoughts and if painful enough, this could lead to mental issues, such as a somatoform disorder, tics, etc. The best way to deal with pain is to accept it and deal with it. If you must seek a counselor to do so, there are phone lines for this sort of thing. Good luck.

No. Will it work forever? No. Are there consequences? Yes.

It is assumed that there are better forms of numbing ourselves...the 'harmless' ones... reading, watching sitcoms, playing a game of tennis, going out for a drive, fishing, sleeping, etc.....
As opposed to drugs, smoking, cutting, computer games, etc...

But ever since the beginning of time, there have been all kinds of ways to numb yourself. I believe, that under certain circumstances, everyone of the mentioned, and unmentioned ways can have a negative AND positive effect on a person.

For example, a father goes out fishing instead of spending time with his son, who becomes a drug dealer...
or... A woman cuts herself repeatedly, creating the need for psychologists, who make their lives off of such behavior.

Nothing is totally bad or good. It just is.

It depends on what you are numbing yourself with and why...sometimes thoughts and feelings get so overwhelming that you can tend to shut down somewhat but you need to know that life is not easy and we all will feel the pain of hurt and loss. Its all in how you deal with it. You need to face what is bothering you in order to deal with it so it is not bad really...it just may be counterproductive to you feeling better in the long run.

numbing your pain all the time can cause people to acquire serious addictions. life is an experience. we are here to experience the bad with good. it's when we go through bad experiences that we learn our greatest lessons. it's then that we can learn how to take what we've learned to enhance our lives and make the future better.

Life is pain. Only time the pain stops is when you're dead. So the pain tells you you are alive. Learn to love it.

WHY ARE YOU HANGING ONTO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE? CARRYING BAGGAGE IS LIKE PICKING UP POOP AND STICKING IT IN YOUR POCKET. IT SOON BECOMES UNBEARABLE TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS. IT CONTAMINATES RELATIONSHIPS AND MAKES PEOPLE WANT TO AVOID YOU.

TRY TO SEEK WISDOM IN MISTAKES, FORGIVE OTHERS FOR THEIRS, AND VOW TO TRY TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY FROM NOW ON. ALLOW YOURSELF TO GROW AND LEARN.
