You should try other things first. When you go to bed, don't watch TV or read. Turn the light out and go to sleep. Try between 12.5mg and 25mg of Benedryl (same ingredient as Tylenol PM-but no Tylenol) if you have trouble sleeping. If that doesn't work, try Magnesium. It's a natural muscle relaxant and that has helped me get relaxed enough to fall asleep. It's in the vitamin aisle. Try one at bedtime.

Good luck.

over the counter stuff like diphenhydromine and doxy-something-something succinate (found in nyquil, etc) work sometimes. the second one gives me nightmares. (all sleep aids can have this effect, otc and prescription)

i didn't think lunesta or sonota worked, but then i have a high drug tollerence. ambien is good stuff, but eventually i started taking double doses cause the effect decreased with regular use, and you are NOT supposed to do that.

you could also take seroquel, a mood stabilizer, as a sleep aid. i don't really like it though; kicks my @$$!! i'd say don't take more than 100 milligrams if you try this.

the absolute BEST sleep aids are barbiturates, but they are virtually extinct now because they are majorly addictive and dangerous: stuff like seconol, amytol, nembutol. phenobarbitol is still around, but pretty much only used as an anti-convulsant.

i recently took ambian for my insomnia... let me tell you , it works, but............ If you are just trying it for the first time, I would break it in half. They are potent. Take it about 10 to 15 minutes before you go to bed. Then just be ready to sleep for a solid 6-8 hours.
