1. You could have power saving features enabled that turn off your hard disk, etc. They're well known to glitch, shutting down or locking up your system.
2. You could have files corrupt in your operating system, a failing hard drive or a bad RAM chip. These can cause a memory dump and shutdown "blue screen of death".
3. You could have a faulty power supply. Particularly if you have any power saving features enabled, they can shut down rather than just go to sleep.
4. The voltage into your home/office can be irregular. Without a UPS or voltage regulator, drop below 105 volts on your household current and down goes your computer.
5. You could have a faulty screen saver (particularly if you're using a 3rd party product). Sometimes, rather than just screen saving, they'll lock up your computer.
6. Your processor could be overheating. Processor fans are prone to failure. If it's dead, your CPU will overheat and shut down on a very irregular basis.
7. You could have a cat. Mine loved to play with the power cord, unplugging my system while I was at work.

If you are running windows and have auto updates turned on (as you should), then after an update many times the computer reboots. Sometimes it doesn't restart and just stays off.
Other than that it could be a power supply going bad.

Does shut off mean black screen like you shut it down?
Is there any error messages?
What operating system are you running?
Does it start back up normal?
Does everything seem to run normal?
This info. needed for an answer that isn't just a guess.

Also, check the processor fan...make sure it's running...Or else the processor will overheat and shut down intermittently
