My 3 month old is constipated. I had her on Nestle Goodstart Supreme ARA/DRA, but the doc thinks she was having a reaction to the milk, so now she's on the soy. Now, she's constipated and he has me pumping her full of karo syrup. I don't want to do this to her forever. Has anyone else had this problem, or can suggest a better formula with less than 1.8 of iron in it??? I am almost positive it is the iron doing it to her. Any help or suggestions would be great - the doctor seems to just want me to fill her full of syrup before he has me try anything else. Thanks!

I started my baby on "Parent's Choice" formula. That is the best formula in my opinion. It is cheaper of course but my child did not have cholic with it and did not become constipated. I later got on WIC and had to change formula to Good Start..my child was constipated for a week. He had to adjust to the changes.
The only thing with Parents Choice is it does not contain the ARA/DRA. (of course back in the day... no formula contained that and babies turned out great). I would of stuck with Parents Choice if WIC would of approved it.

Yes, you are probably right on the money. Iron fortified formula did it to my child too. Tell your pediatrician you want to switch formula because a 3 month old should not be constipated. They poo should still be mushy. Goodstart isn't the best formula in the world to give a baby until they are ready to be weaned off formula altogether. Seriously though, it is kind of cheap. Get her isomil or prosobee without iron. She will be a lot better off. Also, after she has had formula, try giving her a bottle of water too. Karo is not good to do.

My oldest son started out on soy formula. He was extremely constipated and I had to change formulas. Karo Syrup is what I used alot of the time per my grandmother. I would ask him if changing formulas again would help. If not, she will eventually get past this stage. Good luck!

It is the iron, though most doctors won't admit it. My son got so sick, we had to take him to the ER when he was 10 days old and the Dr, told us it was iron in the formula. We put him on low iron Presidents Choice(Canada) and he was fine. To treat the constipation, give him 1 tbsp corn syrup in a bottle of water 2-3 times a day.

First of all, read the paperwork that came with the formula or on the can. Most times there is a phone number to call or a computer address to write to for answers. 2. read the label on other formula's for their account of Iron. (Iron is almost always constipating). 3. Check with the pharmacist, he may have an answer for you. Personally, I hate the pumping of sugar into any one, and last but not least, water. Lots of water. Good luck on your footwork.

iron does reason constipation yet until eventually you're nursing then the iron tablets you're taking won't result toddler or maybe then little or not greater iron could bypass into your breastmilk i've got faith.... yet confident in case you oftentimes do breastmilk and at the instant are giving formulation then it may reason some constipation

I used Similac with low iron and it worked pretty well with my first daughter. It's so hard when they're so little and you want them to not have a stomach ache. Doctor's can become somewhat close minded to solutions I think. But you also don't want to switch to often because that can cause stomach upset on top of the constipation. Hang in there...

Some babies just have poopy problems, give the soy awhile. The iron is a factor sometimes. Your doc's right about the karo, and sometimes, the karo takes weeeeeks to work out the stuff from the cow's milk, they get backed up. In my family, we do tummy rubs, and help them get their legs to their chest. Sometimes, it help the pooping, sometimes, it just calms and quiets the wee one.

My son had the same problem. He had the constipation and projectile vomiting from the milk based formula similac. The doctor switched him to Isomil (soy based formula with iron...) Have you tried a little mineral oil in his formula? We did this and my sister also had to do it with her son....also, if you are changing formulas from one to another without a gradual introduction then this is going to upset his delicate system too.

I'd try another doctors opinion. It is the iron. Go with your own feelings, if you don't think its the right thing ( karo syrup ) then trust yourself and seek anothers doctors opinion. Personally, if it was me I'd give her oatmeal cereal, regardless of what the doctor said or what all the bull **** other people would say.
