To start with, in a just war, no civilians would be killed. Almost impossible with modern weapons and tactics. Defending against an invader is justifiable, so the Iraqis are justified in fighting the U.N. forces that have invaded their country. I'm not especially proud of that. Overthrowing an unfair and abusive government could be thought of as justifiable. There's no special reason I just thought of that. I don't like wars at all, so I can't think of very many reasons I could think of a war as being "just". What is justice, after all, speaking objectively? All people who fight in wars have some kind of justification; some sense of "doing the right thing", but it's a difficult thing to see it with any real objectivity. For example, when the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, that act brought WW2 to an end, but many civilians died. Was that a just action in that it ended the war or was it unjust because of the civilian casualties?
Merely calling something a just war doesn't really make it right.

A tricky proposistion. I would venture to say that both sides of every war in history thought that they were fully justified in their actions. War is something that a group has to work themselves up to. If there isn't something that at least sounds good, the soldiers wouldn't fight.
Personally, I think only a defensive war is justified. If your country is attacked and invaded, I would call that self-defense. But it would have to stop when your land is no longer occupied.

World War II. When your naval facilities are bombed without provocation and you lose a few thousand people in a raid on a Sunday morning at 8:00 am local time, I believe you have a right to go to war.

id say somehting like the French underground VS the Nazis in WW2. their land was overtaken and conquered, civilianswere hauled off to be killed....that seems to be a candidate in my opinion.
there really isnt a template or a mold for a "just war" but some conflicts do come close.
this one were having (inthe US/Iraq) is the complete opposite. its just uncalled for.

its a war that is someone defending themselves
example: joe is mobbing suzy. suzy punches joe in the nose. joe's nose is now broken. suzy had the right to defend her self by punching joe in the nose
