The only time it is good is in a musical. A musical director and a theater director. It is OK to have an assistant director for non-musicals, only if they tell their ideas to the Director first, before they give you advice.

NOT a good idea. Have you ever gone into a video store with a friend, and tried to agree on which film to rent? Imagine that kind of disagreement going on during rehearsals. For an entire MONTH...!
The essential function of a director is to provide the final word on what goes into a production, and what doesn't. Frankly, it isn't a position that wants to be operated by consensus; it's a (benign) dictatorship.

It depends on how well they work together. I know two directors that work together all the time, non-musicals and musicals, and they do an amazing job. But if one or both of the directors become power hungry or get too full of themself then it can be a bad experience.

Well, in our play right now, we have a director, an assisant director, a student director, a choral directior, and choeograpy director. So...that is 5, but the only thing they really have to agree on is who to put in roles, then they are kinda up to whatever they want for their area.

From personal experience, I believe it can be confusing for the actors and cause problems. It is nice to have a strong assistant director or stage manager, but you really should have one person in charge.
