I'm only a freshman in high school, but I'm already looking into colleges. I really want to go to University of Michigan. Here is Florida, it is required in order to go to college to have at least 2 full credits of any foreign language. Does anybody know if that is the same for University of Michigan? I want to know this because I want to know if I need to take a foreign language (something besides Spanish, preferably) or just stop now and do something better. Thank You.

for any University 2 years of the SAME (foreign) lang. is REQUIRED...
BUT 3 yrs. is recommended
ummm im a spanish speaker..
so i can say that spanish can be difficult for some ppl..
to learn how to speak.. because of the accents..
but many ppl enjoy French...
if your class offers it... u should try Italian...
or anythin thats Latin based..
since it will held u with english class...
(Latin is the foundation of the english lang)

Most universities require two years of a foreign language, but if you've already studied a foreign language you can test out of the language requirement. U Mich recommends that you have at least 2 years of a foreign language in high school.
From their website:
5. Freshman applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts are REQUIRED to have completed the following: 4 years English, 3 years mathematics, 2 years biological and physical sciences, 3 years history and social sciences, 2 years of the same foreign language.
6. Students entering the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts are strongly encouraged to take four years of language study, but only two years are required for admission.

Most colleges require some type of foreign language, but you can usually still be admitted without it. You would probably have to take 2 semesters once you are at the university though. So I would recommend going ahead and taking it.
For the record, English is a Germanic language, based on German, not a Romance language, based on Latin.

well i'm a junior in highschool and live in missouri. Our school doesn't have a graduation requirement that says to complete 2 full years of a foreign launguage but yes to get into a university we have to take 2 full years of a foreign launguage in highschool. You can say its a college/university requirement. u should take a foreign launguage because maybe every state might have the same rule that to get into a university u have to have 2 full years of foreign launguage. its a rule in our state. hope this helps out.

Three years of one language is very helpful when applying to a good university. Two years each of two languages is another option.
By the way English is a combination language, a German base and a lot of Latin vocabulary and some Latin grammar.

My daughter has taken 4 years of American Sign Language as her foreign language in high school and has college credits for it. Not only does it help her understand another language and culture, but also gives her another outlook on life and credits with future jobs. Good Luck!
