Lightning Is atracted to the metal rod that should be higher then for Instance your house and grounded to the ground,the lightning hits the pole and grounds out In the ground.Some put a steel strap Into the ground.
Note do not attach the pole to your house keep it near but not next to because because It might follow a electrical signal and could burn your house as It did my brothers house.
