The "T" in T-shirt is derived from the shape of the shirt. If u hold it up by its sleeves you will see that it looks like the letter "T" in capitals.

i dont now, but my guess would be that the shirt is kinda in the shape of the T .. see? like the sleeves is the top part and the middle line is on the body
