Something happened to one of the files for the sound card, or the registry entries for your sound card (or some other sound-related stuff) are messed up.

Someone already posted a way to check if your sound card is installed and working by using the Device Manager program.

To fix the problem, you can uninstall and re-install the sound card driver. Open Control Panel and click the Add/Remove Program icon.
Your sound card driver should be listed there.
If not, then you can just try re-installing the driver.

Before you do that, you can try using an XP program called System Restore. Click the Start button and go into the Programs|Accessories|System Tools menu and you should find it there. System Restore can restore the state of your Registry and some system files from backed up files which can date back a few days. Any changes you make are reversible. You should read the Windows help file for System Restore before using it though. Click Start, then select Help & Support, then search for 'System Restore.'

Try this - On your computer, go to control panel. Click on "Sounds and Audio Devices". Select the "volume" tab. Click on "Speaker Volume". Click "Restore Defaults", then apply, and then ok.

check start>settings>control panel>system>device manager to see if you have any yellow exclamation points. If not, your sound card driver may have a conflict or became uninstalled.
Check that "volume control" icon, as any one of the inputs may have drifted to "mute".

Check your speakers connection, if connected, check your volume settings, make sure nothing is muted. If thats not the problem then you probably have to reinstall your sound drivers.
