Ronnie Van Zant wrote Sweet Home Alabama as more of a reply to Neil Young's Southern Man.......He ment it as a joke. No way did he ever think it would become a classic song.

If you're referring to the line "hope neil young will remember, a southern man don't need him around anyhow" it's because Skynyrd took offense to some of the lyrics knockin' the south in the Neil Young song titled Southern Man.
