Ronnie Van Zant wrote Sweet Home Alabama as more of a reply to Neil Young's Southern Man.......He ment it as a joke. No way did he ever think it would become a classic song.

If you're referring to the line "hope neil young will remember, a southern man don't need him around anyhow" it's because Skynyrd took offense to some of the lyrics knockin' the south in the Neil Young song titled Southern Man.

yep, it was Neil Young...he had made some nasty remarks about southerners in one of his songs (Southern Man) and this was a retort to that...
