You have to wait 'til they try to kill you first ... then, if they were unsuccessful, you are allowed to defend yourself.
To answer your question, there is, these days, little respect in this country for the right to property.
It's the first step towards socialism: "Let them take it - they probably need it worse than you do, anyway."

if you have recently been burgaled i am so sorry, and fully understand what you are going through.i have been burgled 4 times, the 3rd time while my partner and i,and our 3 children were in bed,my eldest daughter(10yrs old) disturbed them, but they had taken almost everything.2wks before xmas, lucky for us for some reason,we hadnt put the presents under the tree, which normally by then we would have done.dvd player,x box,40 games, they even took the cushion cover off the settee to carry everything in.if i'd have caught them i would have given them a good kicking, but then i would have got charged, while they get a slap on the wrist,i gather your from england, because the law stinks.my doors and windows have so much security on them, how do i get out in a fire? my family are now even more at risk because of these bastards.

If someone breaks into your house and you are there, you have the right to shoot them! As long as they are facing you when you pull the trigger, you will be protected under self defence laws. If you shoot them in the back while they are leaving, you're in deep poopoo.
What do you mean you have no rights?

In the UK you have the right to use reasonable force. If you have children in your house then that level of reasonable force can be very wide ranging if you feel that your life or the lives of your children are in danger. It would then be a matter for the jury.
There is a considerable amount of caselaw in the UK that governs such situations.

This happened to someone who lives a few houses away from us. She found the father and son (also from our neighborhood) coming out of her house with her belongings- they were standing in her front yard....later she told us that the police said that they can't lock them up, because she didn't have a do not enter sign anywhere outside.

Well, for one thing, they don't have the right to walk away with your possessions.
You do have the right to protect yourself - just not to chase after the intruder to cause them injury. If your life is at risk, there is no question that you should do what you can to protect yourself.

He commits offence of trespass and burglary. Both being punishable you can report to Police for action. Also you have right to private defence by which you can apply necessary force to stop or catch him.But you shall be punished if you exceed the said right. For example after overpowering him you cannot hit him again.

You can infact in the UK use what ever force is needed to protect your self from an intruder, you can't however ask some one u dont like to ur house then Kill them and say they broke in.But the law in the UK is sometimes very Mis matched and not all its seems, so best to let the intruder leave with what ever he/she wants.ha ha ha

Nobody has the right to walk off with your possessions.
You have the right to use reasonable force to protect person and property.
You do not have the right to go beyond reasonable force, because it isn't your job to administer punishment for their crime - that's up to the courts.
