Big Dawg's answer has the most detail--never thought of Gessler, though I knew about the others, somewhat. The last, biting, comment was irrelevant and fallacious--the President, no matter your opinion of him, is much more than a "nominal" commander-in-chief under the Constitution.

MILITARY LEADERS - not political leaders

Paul von Hindenburg
Wilhelm Groener
Hans von Seekt

Otto Gessler
Kurt von Schleicher

Of course, these military leaders often resigned their commissions and took over civilian jobs - Hindenburg and Groener both took government positions

Hitler was not a military leader other than as head of government - W. Bush isn't a military leader either, except as nominal commander-in-chief
