I'm applying to Northwestern this fall and i wanted an essay that was going to be truly unique and somewhat humorous I started writing my essay about the significane of beards- what they can tell about a person and my own personal experiences of having a beard. Later I was reading the US News College Handbook 2007. Inside there was an article from the dean of admissions at Rice who said that one of the best essays she ever read was about a man telling how growing a beard affected his relationships. I don't know what to do, I really liked my idea but if the dean at Rice publicly wrote this in a book then it doesn't seem to be an unkown topic among schools. I dont want Northwestern to think I ripped the idea from the book. What do I do?

I decided to answer your question when I saw the 49ers name. My husband has been a fan since we were kids.
At your age I imagine you have had many experiences, some of which are humorous & some, that at the time may not have been or seemed so. It's too bad that your beard essay was taken. But if you really thought about your life & the experiences you have had I know you will come up with something to equal the beard. Did you go away to camp?? Do you have siblings that you use to torture or is there something you did together that was memorable???
Good Luck to you. With your amibition to attend Northwestern I am sure you will succeed in finding a new topic for your college essay.

If your read what your wrote, you may realize that your topic has not been taken. You want to write about the Significance of beards and what they tell about someone.
The other guy wrote about how growing a beard change his relationships.
They are two different topics. They both deal with beards, but one is a first person account and yours is as an outsiders look. I think you can still write about the beard and it would be totally different. Good luck

I'm glad you caught that. Good show. Keep it up in college and you'll do great.
Okay - so you know personal and relationship are "in". What are other options: runny nose/bandages/hair color and the type of service you receive at a restaurant. You could even run an experiment at McD. You go in and a friend follows. Order the same-add time dimension-add several days.
I needed to get a cane recently. Big difference. Women are utterly surprized when I hold the door for them now.
Don't forget to spell/grammar check!

I would not use the idea about beards, because they might feel that you are too "lazy" to figure out an idea of your own, even though you had it figured out before reading the handbook. :)

Best of luck!

Think of something new to write about..

How about something like the effect of wearing a pink shirt to attract women...

Go to a club wearing normal clothes and talk to like 30 girls and see how many #'s you get

The go to the same club wearing a pink polo and talk to 30 more girls the exact same way and see if wearing pink really makes you seem more attractive...

how about how children are treated as second class citizens socially and legally. it gives them a wrong idea about freedom and equality. amny are smarter than we think and deserve better etc.

or how about how ugly people are discriminated against and should be offered minority protections.
