Tomatoes can be planted year after year in the same spot.
Fill a one foot wide and deep trench with a good compost/manure mix.Set the plants 18" apart. Plant when all danger of frost is passed around end of May in full sun (southern B.C.,Canada). Make a hole so that only the top leaves of the Tomato plant show when planted. Sink a one gallon flower pot into the soil next to each plant. Stake as soon as possible.
Tomatoes should only be watered and fertilized via the flower pot. Every 14 days place in the bottom of the flower pot 1 tbsp garden lime and fill pot with compost tea or a Miracle Grow mixture.Keep plant moist. Build a roof over the plants, or plant under a roof overhung on the south side of the house to avoid wet leaves.Rain on the Tomato leaves causes the devastating blight.Tie the growing stem to the stake.
Pinch out the lateral shoots. Beginning of August pinch off the growing tips to encourage the ripening of the fruit.

I just had the best tomatoe season ever. i've been planting for 15 years and finally got the best location and used an amazing soil mix from the local nursery. It was called mushroom soil mix. A blend of mushroom compost and topsoil. Wow!! What a difference. Ive always had good gardens but this was incredible. I built a raised bed garden on the south side of the house that gets full sun and keeps warm at night from the heated brick wall next to the garden. Penty of water so the tomatoes dont crack, keep the fruit picked regularly, and fertilize every couple weeks with rapidgro. These all help any garden go nuts. Good Luck

Before you plant, put a cup or so of sugar and a multivitamin in the hole. Water the hole a little. Pinch off some of the bottom branches and plant the tomato deep, bury as much of the stem as possible (it will grow roots from the stem). If the plant is leggy, lay it on its side and bury up to the bushy growth near the top.
Dont smoke around them, they can catch the tobacco mosaic virus. Water from below, not above or the tomatoes will split.
Water deeply and consistently, if they get dry and you water too much, they will split.
Drill holes in a coffee can, fill with pebbles and put in the ground next to the tomato plant. When you water, fill the can and it will slowly water the tomatoes.
Pinch off the suckers (little branches that grow where the stem and branch make a V) they dont produce and take energy from the plant, resulting in smaller tomatoes.
And finally, if you want big tomatoes, pick all but one or two off the plant and it will put all its energy into making them big.

Hipichick had some great suggestions. I would add:
- incorporate plenty of good rich compost. Your tomatoes are only as good as the soil they are grown in.
- tie them with cloth or pantyhose to a firm wooden stake. Some people build ladderlike wooden cages to support them.
- suggest you plant at least on early variety, like Early Girl, to enjoy while you wait for the later ones. Some of the heirloom varieties, like Brandywine or Prudens Purple, have the best flavor and you can save the seeds too.
- do NOT give them shade! tomatoes need full sun!
- do NOT plant them in the same place year after year!! Disease organisms live and overwinter in the soil. Rotate all crops so that they grow in the same spot only every 3 years.
Stand by for awesome tomatoes!

dig a trench(deep enough for a bag of dog food),put bag of dog food in trench, put rich dirt on top & then and your tomato plant & more rich soil(cow mahure) . you can leave the dog food in the bag, just make holes in the bottem for drainage.
