when you have a tee-shirt (of any color) that has been yarn dyed
and then knitted it will have that appearance, the knit shirts that have a more solid look to the have been garment dyed, that means the fabric was woven, then dyed, cut and sewed to make the finished product. grey tee-shirts are more popular with the speckled effect than a solid, that's why more of them processed in the yarn dyed method.
