How about putting different types of food options in his home? Which does he prefer? Is he instinctively drawn to the food that's better for him?

Do an etheogram of his behaviour. You have to write down a load of his behaviours, like eating, active, sleeping, drinking, investigating, etc. Then get a timer, and every 2 minutes, or whatever time limit suits you, record what he's doing that second. Then make a graph up, so you can see what he does most etc. You could then see what affects his behaviour, e.g. repeat the experiment at night, then when he's just been fed or something.

Have you thought about trying different lighting options. Maybe two weeks with different brands of lighting to see how he may react to them. Keep his temps right though, you do not want to hurt him. I also like the idea of the different food options as well. You might try colors as well, put a different color background on the back of his tank i.e. blue, red. You could see if there is a difference in the way he eats, reacts to people. Have fun!!

Can he tell time. Well not time but can he tell that your gone longer then one amount of time then another? Like you may say yes because he always ex nods his head before you give him dinner. well dose he know its night and so it must mean dinner time or does he know because you always pet him right before dinner. It might be complicated good luck though!

you could try to see if you can trick him some how like fooling him into thinking a plastic lizard is real or disguise some thing to look like a bd to see how he would behave. will he form friendship with another pet or animal which is unusual bd behavior. can you get him to dance?

So when the angel of the darker drink
At last shall find you by the river brink
And, offering his Cup, invite your Soul
Forth to your lips to quaff – you shall not shrink
