My typing teacher thinks music will help us type more accuratley and faster so she wants to let us listen to our ipods during class, but the principle thinks we'll use them in other classes when we're not supossed to. Got any good factual arguments for why we should be allowed to? Please include sources .

I agree that it helps by keeping you on a rythym. Our typing teacher played music for us. I don't think students should bring their individual ipods. That brings up theft, breakage, some kids will not have one (which will hurt them and put stress where it shouldn't be), and kids listening to music that their parents do no allow. The teacher's suggesting this is a lack of maturity on her part.

Technically your typing teacher should be the one bringing the research to your principal. Technically too, both your teacher AND your principal should know about Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. The basic idea is that people are intelligent in many ways. Music is one of those intelligences. This alone should be justification for using music in the classroom. HOWEVER, since your principal has already said no, a few disgruntled students aren't going to change his mind. My best advice as an educator is to ask your typing teacher to bring in a radio. She can provide the music to start off with, and ask everyone adjusts to the music, she can ask students to bring in appropriate music for everyone. You may not have the same taste in music as other people in the class, but you can easily adjust, especially if you know you can bring in music of your own.

I think you should be let to use ipods in typing class. Tell your principal that it makes kids learn to type fastter I mean listen to your favorite song and try to type! You really look like a pro! If you don't have a ipod sing a tune or say the words in your head that is how I type so fast!!

Because the Principal is wrongly assuming that your actions in one class would transfer over to another class.

Do you paint in English class? No, only art? How about doing math during gym class? No? What about jumping jacks during science?
Hum....

Get my point?

We use to listen to music in typing to get a rhythym going to the beat. It really does help. Music is great for helping to develop cognitive thinking. I helps to keep you focused when typing if you type to the beat!

Music is a lot of help when it comes to classwork or homework. Music just relaxes you in a way and makes your mind think clearer.

The music would act like a metronome. That way you can get your rhythm down.

Maybe you should suggest to your teacher to bring a cd player to school and use it rather than upset the principal.
