USB stands for Universal Serial Bus.
You know what 'universal' means, so I won't explain that.
'Serial' means that data is transferred 1 bit at a time, as opposed to data transfer on a 32 bit CPU, which can read and write data 32 bits at a time.
'Bus' is a term used for a grouping of control and data lines that connect between circuits. A 32 bit bus transfers 32 bits of data at a time, but there are more circuit lines than 32, because there needs to be several lines that control the data flow.

It is based on the Universal Serial Bus (USB) that was designed so a bunch of different manufactureres could use it for their add-on equipment with the power and the signals all coming through the one cable.
