Are you doing a paper on people who have immigrated to American over time, such as in your great grandparents era? Or is this on the illegal immigrants that has been in the news so much recently. There is a lot of information on both that we could help you with, but what is it you need to know. What type of project are you doing?
If you are doing it on the older immigrants who came through Ellis Island and Angel Island that is an entire different subject than the illegal immigration that is occurring now.
What does your assignment say?

well, like the immigrants came from many different countries and if they came via the Atlantic ocean they all were in processed thru Ellis Island. They have books there so you can see your ancestors signatures where they signed then the name they were given. A lot of last names were changed if they sounded too foreign.

There are2 types of immigrants in the United States.
1) Legal - Those who apply and are accepted, sponsored, and usually become citizens, pay taxes, etc.
2) Illegal- Those who sneak in to the country, usually accross the Mexican border. If caught the law says to deport them, but this rarely happens. They illegally get jobs that pay under the table, or obtain social security numbers frauduently.
Bottom line-both groups are in pursuit of what many in the world desire-----the American Dream.
