Classes won't help. You need to get books.... CCNA books to start. Then buy a router (Cisco 1700 series) off of ebay, 2 if you can afford it, and a couple wic-1enet cards. Read the books and play around on the routers. At the same time, install Windows Server 2003 and Linux on a couple machines and play around with them. Before playing around, figure out a task that you want to complete.... so you aren't just aimlessly doing stuff. You could probably take MCSE and CCNA classes as well.

Here's the problem with network administrators: there's not that many of them that know what the hell they are doing.

Certifications are not enough. Training is not enough. What matters is real hands on experience.

You already got told the most important thing you need to do: get yourself a used cisco router and screw with it until you break it. Then fix it. Then do it again.

Get at the very least a machine running 2000 or 2003, and a machine running either freeBSD or Linux. Figure out what gets them connected and what screws up their services.

Why?

The internet runs on cisco routers. If it is not a cisco router, it probably borrowed or stole something from the way cisco routers work.

Work servers are going to be either a unix flavor or windows 2000/2003. Cover your bases. No need to worry about OS X, it networks the same as if it was freeBSD.

Don't worry from George's answer.
Read CCNA stuff and configure your IP tables and routing entry in Linux.
that will serve as your start up.
Later on you can build on that.
