I watch the news alot, and I see Middle eastern people throwing their sandals at people they don't like or something they don't like. If they are trying to insult that person or thing, why not throw a rock? They would do more damage, so why a sandal?

Sandals, or the soles of the shoes are considered "rude" to put in ones face. While it is quite normal in America to put your feet up on tables in front of people (teachers love doing this), for Middle Easterners this is considered rude. Showing the sole of the foot or sandal/shoe is not considered polite. This may explain why sandals are thrown at individuals which are unrespected (Saddam).

It is the most humilitating thing to do to someone. most middle eastern folks were hitting the statue of saddam with the bottom of their sandals, and the news man told us why. it is the equivilant of spitting in your face.
