Actually, I like all of his short story collections better than any of the novels. They are also easier (and shorter) to get into.
Night Shift
Skeleton Crew
Different Seasons
Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Everything's Eventual (not as good)
Have fun!

I've read a lot of his earlier works.
Cujo- about a crazed rabies ridden dog
Firestarter- about a little girl who can start fires with her mind
It- Didn't really like this one
Pet Semetary- Man brings back his dead child
Christine- Ghost Driven Car that kills people
The Shining- Haunted hotel and posessed dad
Out of these, my favorite would have to be Pet Semetary. Also, the scariest.
However, if his books are better than the movies, which they usually are, I am dying to read The Green Mile, The Stand, and Shawshank Redemption.

Loved is early work including the Richard Bachman books, there was a spate of books whilst I still bought them was a touch disappointed with content and style BUT OMG he is back on form.
I loved the Dark Tower series this is a sort of gunslinger / quest / role playing book where the characters get well and truly absorbing......................gave them to several non likers of SK and they enjoyed them.
From his recent books the Cell I would say he was VERY much back on form and well worth a read, for everyone that has a cell phone........this book REALLY makes you think.
OK off soap box lol lol bit of a SK fan if you had not guessed LOL

The Stand, very scary story about the world being decimated by a military virus, then the survivors aligned between good and evil forces and had a showdown.
BTW, when you start reading The Stand, make sure you are playing Don't Fear the Reaper, it will creep you out.

I love all of his books and I can't believe nobody recommended "Salems Lot". Its one of his earlier novels about vampires taking over a small Maine town and the people who try to stop them! I found this book really frightening!! But like just about everyone else who answered here I have to agree that "The Stand" is the best book he has written. Its a long book but once you get into it you won't want to put it down!!!

well the order i have read them in is this
the shining- about a 3 person family moving into a haunted hotel for the winter- very good
misery- about an author who crashed his car in the middle of no where and a nurse takes him home and makes his life living hell- very very very good!!!
and im on the stand- about a virus that kills mostly everyone in the world and the certain few who live are to choose between good and evil.... its getting very good!!!
if your going to read them, read them in the order i listed because the shining will get you hooked and then misery will hook you even more, and then your hooked in the beginning in the stand.

The Stand is supposedly his single magnum opus (ultimate e book written out of his profession). I enjoyed it, because of the fact no longer in user-friendly terms is it scary, in spite of if it additionally handles the belief of establishing a society out of scratch somewhat properly. There are some haunting photos (the climax of the e book is written superbly) and the characters are balanced, that's something I constantly seem for in a e book. maximum of his different books are ok, yet this one i presumed grew to become into magnificent. Get the unabridged, because of the fact you will wish that e book on no account stopped.

I love The Langoliers. It's about people on a plane that get stuck in a time warp thing and they have to find a way to escape before the evil comes.
