you can't have protein in your blood.. it's what you digest to get energy from, carry more vitamins into your blood stream... you probably misunderstood whatever it is you heard...

Firstly this could be perfectly normal. If it is only a little higher than the normal reference range then its probably nothing to worry about.

It also depends on the type of protien. The two main types measured are albumin and globulin. High levels of albumin are usually associated with dehydration or if they are taken from an arm that has had a tourniquet on it for a while.

High levels of globulin can be associated with several conditions including kidney and liver disease (but these usually have other symptoms and preceeeding conditions such as alcohol excess (liver) or diabetes (kidneys).

There is also a condition called Waldenstroms syndrome type 2 which is a chronic blood disorder, usually affecting young women and causing purple rashes on the legs.

In isolation however, a mild increase in blood protien is unlikely to be anything of note.

It could mean that your kidneys are not functioning properly. The kidneys are the cleansing system of your body and if they are not breaking down items appropriately then this could by why it is higher.

Sometimes they will say you have proteins in your urine and it is related to this as well.

my wife has kidney failure and one of the things they measure for her is the protein content of her urine. it is not the defining factor of kidney failure so don't panic but I suggest you see your gp about it to be sure. the sooner it's diagnosed the better, whatever it is
