Can I use the leaves that have spots, tears, or blemishes on them? Also, should I wash the leaves before I put them out to dry?

the more blemishes.. the more the taste changes.. take a taste..but yes you can use them.. instead of drying them.. I will grind them up (blender or food processor) with just a bit of olive oil and freeze it.. the taste stays alot fresher. I do it every year, and always use it all up!!as for washing.. always! make sure the water cold, otherwise the leaves will start to wilt.. i will fill my sink up and give them a bath (basically) .. i love basil!!

You should never wash herbs if you can help it, it diminishes the flavor. You can use torn or spotty leaves. Freezing with olive oil is a great idea and does last longer and hold taste better than drying. Always pick your herbs right after the dew dries in the morning to get the highest concentration of flavor.

there is nothing wrong for using blemished leaves, but why you
want to use them .when the season start buy one of those little plant in a vase and when the time is right around the first of june if you have alittle patch on your backyard ,you can put it there and in 15 to 20 days you will have so many leaves to make a good pesto sauce
and many other things, good luck
