I have a friend who is pretty smart. (You could even say very smart).
How do you suggest he tells people (e.g. on job applications) without coming across as arrogant?

Some good answers so far, but many are relying on the interview, which is the easy bit.
Also, he's smart, but lazy, so doesn't have a great list of accomplishments.

There's a difference between being confident and being arrogant.

However, I don't think that he can come across as arrogant on a job application...that's where he has to list all the reasons why they should hire him, so he should confidently list all past accomplishments.

At the interview, however, I suggest that he appear eager to learn new things, to apply past skills to new tasks, and always take any sort of constructive criticism well. He should not get defensive when they start talking about weaknesses or questioning parts of his resume.

Good luck to him. Do you think that he comes across as arrogant?

Being humble. You can list your qualifications and not be arrogant. When a perspective employer mentions the amount of education of various projects the person has, he can reply that he enjoys learning as education (through books, classes and on the job) is never ending. That he likes to not only learn but put into play what he has learned to enable what he is working on to be a constant improvement upon an already available quality product or outcome which helps it be efficient and effective. Thus reendering it a profficient process in maintaining top quality management.

Simply say "quick study" or "fast learner".

Be sure to add in there that he / she is willing to learn from whatever they have to offer.

There is a fine line between arrogance and self esteem. Have him / her try out a few lines on you and others to see if the remarks will sound arrogant or simply positive about being able to handle the job.

Good Luck ! : )

On job applications he should make himself look as smart as possible!!

Being intelligent doesn't automatically make you arrogant!! I know some pretty dim people who are incredibly arrogant.

just putting down the facts as to his capabilities, on a job application ..should not come over as arrogant ...the facts willspeak for themselves ...the potential employer will be looking at job capabilities ...from the form ....so say it how it is and trust me the person reading it will know what is what ...they have had lots of experience .. best of luck to your friend

You don't put that on a job application. In the personal interview let the interviewer discover this for him/herself by his dazzling responses to questions.

I do not think he is very SMART if he did not convince the interviewer that he is not arrogant.

If he is as smart as you say he is, they will find that out on their own. I would say if he has to put it on his resume or tell people then maybe he is only trying to reasure himself.

If he's that smart, his accomplishments should speak for him. If he has none, then maybe he isn't that smart.
