They are an organization of businesses that in order to maintain a good rating among themselves they each must maintain standards that their customers enjoy. People who want to know something about a business should contact the BBB at the web site below and check them out. If a business IS legit they will be listed and there will be data on them about how the are doing and the BBB gives them a rating to reflect how customers feel.
If you have a complaint about a business go to that same web site and file. A good business will try to keep a good name with the BBB and that is how you can get to that business through the BBB. In the future if you suspect something about a business go to the BBB first. It could save a lot of time, money, and pain.
To do something about a business which screwed you over you have other options. On the expensive side, you could file a law suit. You don't want that, though. Try sending a letter to your state attorney's general office. If there are other folks who have had problems with that business, he or she may act on it in a big way. Otherwise, they send out letters to the business and look into things to help resolve issues. I had good results with my a my attorney general in Arizona when I had a problem with an out of state business. It got them off my back.
Regards and good luck

Go to www.bbb.org and click on the File a Complain, Business and read the instruction. You can file online and an assigned agent will contact you.
BBB acts like a mediator between you and the company, utilizing its resources to help you resolve issues but there is no guarantee. BBB isn't a law enforcement agency and therefore companies do not have to respond to them. However, often times when companies receive letters from an official organization/office like BBB they tend to treat the matter more serious than if the communication is coming from an individual.
I have had a success of claiming my lost with help from BBB recently. They are extremely helpful.
If the company you are having trouble with is a small local business, you might want to try exposing them to local TV or radio stations. I have lived in many towns that has "Call for Action" or some sort, where a news reporter help exposing a wrong doing.
If you lost is under $5000 (this amount might differ depending on your local regulation), you can also file a claim at small claims court. There is usually a small filing fee. If the judgment turns out in your favor, the company will have to pay for your claim as well as the court costs.
Best of luck.

The BBB can not really do anything except list the bad guys on their website and say there are unresolved complaints. They will write the company a letter and hope that the company will try and resolve the problem. But the BBB has no authority what so ever. I am not a big fan of the BBB because they are in the profit making business of selling expensive memberships.

The Better Business Bureau is an origanization of Businesses which together with local and state agencies try to maintain a degree of honesty, and corporation between consumers and businesses. All you can do is compalin to them and they will contact the Company you are in conflict with and that advise you of their findings. How ever I have never heared of any consumer getting help from them.
This is a private agency or origanization and it has no powers to levy fines or collect form any one or any company. It's actually more aprestiage thing to belong to the agency. In some cases the Better Business Bureau will contact city or state officials if there is wrong doing concerning a company liscensed by them.
ou need to see an attorney about your lost of funds. Most conpanies will refund or partial anyway to avoid a court room .
good luck:)

Well.. it all depends if the company you have a grievance with is a member of the BBB. If not.... there is nothing you can do short of small claims court. The BBB acts only in behalf of their member businesses. And a company has to PAY to be a member. So most businesses try it.... then realize they are paying for a pointless service.... and then drop them.

BBB.org (Better Business Bureau)
They keep files on complaints from consumers about businesses. The BBB can tell you if a business has complaints and what type.
If a consumer has a problem with a business, BBB can try to reconcile it for the consumer.
