Fender Precision is indeed an all-around good bass. Personally I use a Peavy Millennium for most rock gigs, and I use Fender Jazz fretless bass for blues and jazzier rock sets. For straight-ahead jazz nothing beats an upright bass. But it really depends on what you're looking to play, and I think that the feel of a bass is the most important factor, because you can do a lot to change the sound with various pickups and amplifiers.

The best choice is always the bass that fits the style of the song you are playing but for an all around good bass, get the Fender Precision Bass.
