Yes, this is a tough industry to break into, but there are some good resources out there that can answer your question more thoroughly. If I were you, I would get my hands on the latest edition of Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market. Not only does it have great articles, but it has contact information for practically all the publishing houses (including some international houses). I'd also consider a membership to SCBWI (Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators). There web address is www.scbwi.org. They have all sorts of great online forums that you can access as a member plus it's a great way to network with already published illustrators and people like yourself who have yet to get published. If you're serious it really is worth the membership fee. I'd also join a Yahoo Group called childrens writers and illustrators, it has over 2000 members who would love to answer any of your question and cheer you on as you work toward your dream.
Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

This is a very difficult field to get into. First, most publishers have a stable full of illustrators they use and ultimately assign to do the illustration for a children's book. My suggestion would be to get together a PROFESSIONAL looking portfolio (this means professional PHOTOGRAPHS of your work) and begin submitting them to children's book publishers and magazines. I would also try and get involved in other areas such as magazine covers, greeting cards, and other things. Again, you will need a professional, up to date portfolio done in a variety of mediums, and a lot of tenacity. This is NOT AN EASY score here, so be prepared to wait years. Also, you might want to join the Society of Children's Authors and Artists (look on the web). Your local art league would also be a good thing to investigate. Also, you had better be a TOP NOTCH illustrator who can work cleanly and quickly!

NO, its is NOT a hard field to get into... read, study and research childrens books to get a feel for the "style", and then start submitting to publishers...

in all honesty and seriousness, you are prolly better off writing AND illustrating your own book, then, you wouldnt be submitting you art, youd be submitting "actual product"... publishers look to make money, not hire artists... think of that, and of course, i wish you the best of luck :)
