the giving you the 3 points is a way of off setting what you have JUST used to ask the question, like you said you ONLY get the 3 points when you rate who gave the best response..........
Other than that [i am sure you know] you get 2 for a question answer and 10 for getting rated the best.
It seems an slightly odd system but what the heck its not like they are air miles or anything LOL LOL

I think you meant that when you choose a best answer to your own question, you get 3 points. I would assume the 5 point deduction is to discourage people from asking really idiotic questions(it certainly hasn't eliminated them!) and giving you 3 pts back for picking the best answer to your question is to encourage people to do just that.

A best answer is 10 points. Or if you've asked a question and then you chose the best answer you get 3 points. I guess its all designed to make the site self-sustaining i.e. you've gotta keep answering if you want to keep asking.
