As a former college dj and a young baby boomer - I think I can answer this question more objectively... I think your question may imply that Elvis talent was not his musical or vocal ability... and frankly speaking as one who never got caught up in the hype I would agree. Elvis was more of a hyped up phenomenon than a fantastic talent. Largely his emergence relied heavily on the images that showed up on television. Realize that television was only around for about 5 to 10 years in most American homes. Then add to the fact that Elvis copied a lot of the music and stage movement of then black entertainers who had not been accept by the majority white listeners and viewers. So he was a guy whose great looks bode well for him on the TV and his sound was well received by a post world war II generation who wanted to break the stuffy standards of the previous generation. In short, he was kind of like an icon of the time whose imagery was prime for the time. Many bought into the imagery and worshiped it like an idol. But if you ask me personally I never bought into it and I thought it was pretty plastic. He hardly can sing and he really didnt write any of his songs. He was well staged by his puppet master his agent "The Colonel". Became exploited by the music industry and his fans and this ultimately led to his demise because many thought he was like a god and he was only human and he could not deal with his reality... knowing he was like you and me and everyone was putting him on a pedestal,,,, which complicated by the Beatle invasion steeling his fame.... led him to over dose. So to me he was little more than a poser and quite a pathetic person and not much more. Sort of like the male edition of Maryln Monroe.

He was a breakthrough. He did what no other white male could do...sound like a black person over the radio and make it sound good. I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I kind of see Eminem in the same position Elvis was for rock and roll, but for the rap world.
Elvis was also just electric on stage...Ed Sullivan had to film above his waist because his dancing was sexually offensive for the time.
That's why he was and is so extremely popular.
