i have some grass and i put the plant i found them on in a milk jug. is there anything more i need? and do they need water.

They need to be put back where you found them, or at least outside. Caterpillars are not pets.

If they're gypsy moth caterpillars, you should kill them right away. Otherwise, it really depends on the caterpillar. Some caterpillars have very specific diets - e.g. Monarch caterpillars like to eat milkweed pods. So it'd be nice to know what kind of caterpillar it is.

They need to be put on the same kind of plant you took them from. If they are Monarchs that would be a milkweed plant. Sitting there on grass they will starve to death. And no they don't need water--they get all they need from eating MILKWEED leaves.

u need lots and lots of leaves, and tinsy winsy little water soaked in the leave, so when it rains, get some leaves
